Why Join Scouting?

Scouting reinforces the skills and values we want our children to learn while they're having fun.

Education

Scouting is designed to promote good behavior while arming our kids with the skills and knowledge they need to make wise decisions. Scouts, families, and communities, are helped through education on:

  • Physical and mental health
  • Setting and achieving goals
  • Citizenship
  • Helping others in need.
  • Career preparation and education
  • Fighting child abuse and substance abuse
  • Environmental stewardship

Leadership Skills

Scouting teaches children the skills that help prepare them for a lifetime of ethical leadership.  Scouts BSA gives a scout training in leadership skills and then gives the age-appropriate responsibilities to learn and build skills.

Scouting alumni are more likely to assume leadership roles in jobs, clubs, school organizations, and are.:

  • Almost 90% of all Senior Class and Student Council Presidents
  • More than two-thirds of all Rhodes Scholars
  • More than two-thirds of military academy graduates

Values

Research conducted by Louis Harris & Associates showed that when a random sample of Scouts was asked what Scouting had taught them, almost nine out of ten responded with the following:

  • get along with others (88%)
  • always give your best effort (87%)
  • have confidence in yourself (87%)
  • set goals for yourself (87%)
  • care for other people (86%)
  • treat other people with respect (86%)
  • take better care of the environment (86%)

In addition, Scouts were found to be more likely to:

  • put the needs of others before themselves. (sign of a good leader)
  • make the most ethical, not necessarily easiest, decisions
  • value education and the environment

Best of all Scouting is Fun! The best way to learn and grow.

Our History

Old North Church

The North Chapel (formerly known as the Old North Church)

Troop 373 was founded by First Congregational Church of Sierra Madre in 1924. In the Old North Church, a historical landmark, built in 1890. The Church out grew the ONC and built a second Church across the street in 1928, where services are held today. The Church changed its name to Christ Church Sierra Madre  in 2018.

Parade

Parade

Troop 373 was one of the founders of the Sierra Madre Fourth of July Parade.  The original parade ran from Sierra Madre Memorial Park to the historic Sierra Madre Pioneer Cemetery.  Over the years the parade has grown and Troop 373 is still a regular part of it.

Pioneer Cemetery

Sierra Madre Pioneer Cemetery

Each year, Memorial Day services are held in the cemetery, sponsored by  the Sierra Madre Veterans of Foreign Wars, Harry L. Embree Post 3208.  The  VFW also keeps ongoing records of veterans interred in the cemetery  and with the help of local Scout Troop 373, decorates the veteran's  graves with flags in their honor
